Keep Portland weird!

Despite it's carnaval in the Netherlands, sometimes it's looks like carnaval in Portland. A city which is a little crazy in a good way.

semi-overcast 7 °C

Last thurday I left Seattle and travelled in 4 hours to Portland. Staying with my old friend Joselyn - she lived in Seattle 8 years ago - in a close city which is called Vancouver. Yes, the name is similar to the Canadian city. But before that, I had a lot of fun in Seattle...

Monday: Meeting at advertising company Copacino
An advertising agency which has 30 employees and advices companies like the Seattle Mariners (baseball), the aquarium and Pike place market. Learning: Using every employee in their strength helps every company to a higher level. They work with different specialists which forms a team with account managers.

Tuesday: Who moved my cheese?
I read a great book which I want to recommend to everyone. It's a way for everyone to take a look in the mirror and take a look at your life. "What would I do when I wasn't afraid?" Watch the next video about this great story. PS. The second part is the best part :)

Wednesday: Watch an American trial
My host Jena Robinson is an attorney and had a trail scheduled for Wednesday. The case: a divorced couple where the husband wants to see his daughter with having a dark past. The whole story is to long to explain.
This day I saw the attorneys making their statements and the witnesses answering questions. Learning: trust the good of people but don't get to naive. There is sometimes danger which you don't see with your eyes.

At Thursday I enjoyed the sun and took the bus in the afternoon. I said goodbye to my friends Jena, Chloe, Jose, Silverio, Dawn and after 4 hours saw my friend Joselyn again. After skyping with my friends from Broekhuizen in carnaval suits and Luuk Arts in Norway at friday night (was gezellig mannen!) , I explored the city on Saturday and enjoyed the nightlife. Without knowing anyone I just went into bars and had great conversations. On Sunday Joselyn took me up to Multnomah Falls and I enjoyed a great hike at beautiful waterfalls and nature.

The coming week I will visit a sushi restaurant, The Portland Timbers (MLS Soccer club) and hopefully visit the headquarters of Nike. I met someone at Saturday night which is working there. Hopefully she can help and set up a meeting. At Friday or Monday next week I will probably leave Portland and make a long travel to San Francisco!!

Super Bowl = USA! / Starbucks = Seattle

It's more than a game. If you want to learn about the American culture, visit the USA in the Super Bowl week. Learn about the brand Starbucks, visit Seattle and sit a day in a Starbucks store...than you know.

Super Bowl
This week I watched and learned about football, American Sports Entertainment and the culture of the USA.

1. Football: A strategical game where other sports (soccer) could learn from. Learning: if you are passionate and ambitious in your work, than look at other branches. It will benefit your creativity at your own branch.
2. Sports entertainment: If you want to create attention on a big audience, use extreme targeted entertainment (Football, Artists (Beyonce), commercials).
3. Culture: It uses emotional and painful experiences (School shootings, soldiers in Afghanistan, people with diseases) to make hero's which create nationalism in the USA.

Starbucks
This week I read a book about the brand Starbucks. I visited a Starbucks store and talked with different people. Why are they visiting Starbucks and no other coffee store? "It's a place where you connect with your friends, family or work at a peaceful place. Ow and they have great coffee!" Because I really wanted to experience the brand, I bought and drunk the coffee. Unfortunately..I still don't like coffee...

Great Food
This week I received two invitations for dinner in the weekend. No unfortunately not a romantic diner... First I showed my own skills and made stampot at our house in West Seattle. Of course everyone loved it. On Saturday night I was invited by a attorney named Gary (see last blog). His wife had cooked a great diner in a great, atmospheric house. The whole evening we talked about "life". Best quote? You can't catch up a day in your life, so don't postpone your plans.
At Super Bowl evening I was invited by my friend Silverio. We watched the game and his mum made some delicious Mexican diner.

Meetings
The first meeting this week was at bar/restaurant West 5 with owner Dave Montoure. He runs a nice restaurant at West Seattle.
Learning: create a visual branding structure to have a inspirational guide in your business goals and to your employees.

The second meeting was with marketer and writer Angela Eloise. Nowadays she is a writer and worked at different marketing positions in the past. Divide your branding structure in intangible departments (packaging, customer service, marketing etc.).

It was a nice week where I played soccer with my Mexican friends, saw a couple of old American friends and had one day with a little sun. (Yes it rains a lot in Seattle.)That day I took a walk and enjoyed the bay of West Seattle at a nice seat. Coming Thursday I will travel in a 4 hour bus trip to Portland (Oregon).

Back to the old days!

After 8 years I returned to Seattle. This means that I visited a lot of old friends. It's great to see everyone again. PS. My phone got stolen at the cinema, so unfortunately I don't have much photo's to share.

Working as attorney
My former host mom Jena Robinson is really nice to me. She helps me with a couple of meetings out of her network and I can assist her in work as an attorney. During this week I helped her at her office and this way I improve my English and learn about the law in the USA.

Meeting with owner of magazine SIP

I get the chance to talk with entrepreneur Kirsten Ackerman. She created a magazine about wine and beer which has a circulation of 100.000 readers. It was interesting to see how these magazines exist and what future plans they have. Mainly the income comes from advertizing and the powerful database of 6.000 subscribed individuals.
Quote: Managing is hiring talented people which are completing each other and your business.

Meeting with investor and attorney Gary J Taylor
An inspirational conversation. This wise man told me stories about the great companies which are established in Seattle. The start-ups of Starbucks, Microsoft, Amazon, Costco and Boeing are all founded in Seattle.
Quote: When young and ambitious people get together, energy and good ideas will exist.
Quote: You don't know if you're on a hill if you never been in a valley.

The coming week I will visit bar/restaurant owner Dave Montoure and writer/marketer Angela Smalley.

The last weekend I explored the night live of Seattle. So I am recovering right now from a headache :). Friday I went to a club (birthday) and before that I watched Chloe (former host sister) giving her first performance as a musician. She grew a lot in 8 years (see photo's) Yesterday I visited my old Mexican Soccer friends from Highschool and went to a couple of nice bars downtown. See photo.

Next week more photo's, because all my cell phone photo's are gone.

Vancouver was great - next stop Seattle!

I just arrived in Seattle. Here I will stay with my host family where I also stayed 8 years ago for my highschool. It's great to see them again and it's the start of my USA time! After my last blog I will tell about my experiences over the last 7 days.

Couchsurfing
Day 4: Me reading Shakespeare with community members of a reading group. Yes, that's right ;) I did it and it was fun! In the house where I stayed they had a reading night and of course I had to join.
Play: Much ado about nothing - my reading roles: Antonio & Conrad.

Day 5 & 6: Brasil in Vancouver! Staying at a house with musicians from Brasil and a couchsurfing host from Canada. I went eating at a Sikh temple (religion from India). They have to offer free food to follow their religion. The diversity of people was integrating. Homeless people, business people and people from different cultures went there to eat. (By the way: It's not my favorite food ;))

Meeting: a conversation with a successful entrepreneur Jason Bashnick (Fresh air Cinema). The best advices: "Failing is learning" and "Seach for a good mentor if you start a business".

Day 6: I was invited to a Brasilian restaurant/bar where the musicians played there music. A great atmosphere and let's say I still have to work on my dancing skills. That night I also met a great Dutch snowboard teacher. He invited me to go snowboarding the next day at Cypress hill.

Meeting Invoke Media/Labs: an online agency at the highest level. By a combination of advising companies (NBA, Walt Disney) and making their own products (Hootsuite) they are a powerfull player in the market. Every team has his own specialty and knowledge and they all make use of each other. Quotes strategic director Sean Tyson: "Offer accountable models to convince small companies of your value" and "be functional to customers".

Day 7: At 6 AM in the morning I took the seabus and met my Dutch friend (I only talked with him for 20 minutes). Together with his girlfriend Nathalie he took me to the mountain. Receiving his gear and a free pass he was teaching me for a whole day. It was awesome!!

Day 8: After sleeping at my new Dutch and French friends, I get on the bus to Seattle!

It finally started - Vancouver

A short explanation about my blog: Every weekend I post a new blog. I will describe different subjects which I experienced and will write 1 or 2 lines about my feelings. This way it's easy to read and we still have a lot talk about ;)

sunny -2 °C

The journey: Broekhuizen - Amsterdam - Kevlavik - Seattle - Vancouver
After I missed my last flight, I reached Vancouver downtown after 24 hours of travelling. "An unknown road ahead of me, this is a great feeling! Let's see what Vancouver has to offer."

Couchsurfing
Day 1: When someone gives a stranger a place to sleep at 1 AM in the night... there's only one word for it:hospitable! - Thank you Anita!

Day 2: An adventurous German couple who watches the world cup handball at 7am in the morning. I love sportfreaks :) - Thank you Marlena and Michael.

Day 3: Meeting with an Canadian actress and talked with a lot of inspiring friends of hers. This night we will visit the cinema and watch Zero Dark Thirty.

We are all Canucks
Meeting with Ali Gardener - Vice president marketing Vancouver Canucks

If you know who you are (identity). Make sure, that your consumers are aware of it. Because at the end, people decide with their emotions.

Exploring Vancouver
Walking around in Stanley park is great. Sunshine, friendly people and listening the great music of Johnny Cash, Coldplay and Herman van Veen makes it a great day. At the second day I went running at Jericho beach and the city, water and mountains gave a great view in the morning.
